Viton® Sponge TM (DuPont) resists the corrosive attack of a wide variety of chemicals and fluids. It delivers superior protection against oils, fuels, lubricants, most mineral acids, and fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. It performs well in many aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, xylene) that act as degrading solvents for other rubbers. The operational temperature range of Viton® Sponge is -10°F to +400°F with intermittent service up to 600°F. At high temperatures, Viton® Sponge resists heat and simultaneously retains its good mechanical properties. Viton® Sponge plays a particularly vital role in cases where soft fluoroelastomers are desirable. The practical low hardness limit for solid Viton® is 55 durometer. Viton® Sponge fills this void where a softer material is required, yet the heat and fluid resistance of solid Viton® is necessary. Additional advantages of Viton® Sponge over conventional elastomeric sponges include: low temperature flexibility, high resistance to ozone attack, and low moisture absorption.
